Frore was the first quest added to the game after release, way back in 1999. It's also one of the most entertaining. You will retrace the route of an ancient sect of Undead across the northlands of Osteth, make your way through their caverns, and into the very heart of their city. Back when the quest first appeared, the world had cooled and an expedition led by Sir Joffre Tremblant had set out to find the source. It turned out to be the Gelidites, who were using a fragment of the Hopeslayer's Crystal prison to draw off the heat of the world so that only they could survive. Tremblant's party was turned into undead, but adventurers slayed them, their Gelidite masters, and the Soul Shard itself, restoring warmth to the land, but leading Dereth down a dark path...
Step 1: The Transcripts. The only way in to Frore is via portal. The Gelidites left fragments of an ancient transcript in three monoliths marking their route across north Osteth. In the hands of a skilled planar mage, a completed and translated transcript is enough to open a portal to the lost city. Each person on the quest will need a completed transcript to get their rewards. Before you can assemble your transcript, each person will need a Lich Seal, found on higher level Undead (Lichs Lords and up). Now it's time to do some running. The three standing stones are located near Bandit Castle (66.1N, 51.4E), Neydissa Castle (69.2N, 15.3E, and Stonehold (72N, 22W. Fortunately, all of these are readily accessible these days. Use your Lich Seal like a key to open the Stone near Bandit Castle. The other two are unlocked. Combine the three pieces of the transcript into a single piece, which you should take to the Dericost Translator in Zaikhal. Now head to Plateau Village, where you will find Mairisa bint Fuda, a Planar Mage, at 44.3N, 43.4W. Line up and give her the transcript one at a time. She will give you a key back and summon a portal to a remote mountaintop. There's an Ice Golem there too, so you'll likely have him beating on you when you materialize.
Step 2: Mountain Cavern. Inside the dungeon is a shrine to Tremblant's party. Have a look and then buff up. You'll be fighting Undead and Gelidite Golems, which are higher level Ice Golems. All you really need to buff is a fire weapon and frost protections and banes. You will take sporatic damage from the cold in many places throughout the rest of the dungeon. Head down the only path out of the first room and jump down the pit in front of you. At the bottom, turn left and hug the left wall. You will now come to a series of large rooms. At the far end of the fifth room is a locked door. Pick it and move through. There will be portals and lever doors ahead of you. Leave your group at the lever door and make sure they know not to take the portals. You, on the other hand, should take the first portal, which will teleport you back into one of the rooms you just passed through. You will materialize on top of a pressure plate that opens the first lever door. Now run through the middle of the next two rooms to hit two more pressure plates. Make sure you've hit all three and head back to the group. Ideally, all 3 lever doors will now be open and your group can pass through all 3 to a portal to the City itself. If the doors aren't all open, try again!
Step 3: Lost City of Frore. You will arrive in a large open room. Straight ahead of you is a locked door for you to pick. Head through and up the ramp into a larger room. Jump down into a pit to the north, where you will find an entrance into Frore's sewers. Head to the right at the first intersection you come to and then hug the right wall. You will find yourself in a larger room with a door on the east wall. Head through the door and you will enter the city itself. Take your group along the left wall to a lever door where you should leave them. Now head back to the entrance into the city and find a door just to the right. Open the door and pass into a small square room. Open the south door and follow the corridor over two bridges into another small room. Pull the lever in this room and jump off of the first bridge to rejoin your group, who should now be able to pass through the lever door. You will come to another large open region of the city. Move along the north wall until you find another corridor leading up - don't go into any of the small structures inside the city. At the top of the staircase are two small rooms. Move into the western one, open the door on the north wall, and jump straight down into a third section of the city. Move as far north as you can and you will find a door in the northeast corner. Pass through it and follow the corridor up the staircase and over a bridge. You will now be in the final rooms. Ignore all the monsters in the small cells and head to the south end of the room, where there is a chest surrounded by a blue light. Use the key you received from Mairisa in Plateau to open it. You will find a Gelidite Robe, the Ice Heaume of Frore, and the Hammer of Frore inside, as well as some quality loot. While you are waiting your turn, stay in one of the small cells to avoid excessive cold damage. While you are here, take the time to check out the room to the south of the chest. You will see several crystal shards here - remnants of the Great Work.
