A Ghost of an ancient Empyrean appeared unexpectedly on the fringe of the Olthoi North shortly after Antius Blackmoor's death. He seems connected to Grael, the Spear of Mukkir, and perhaps knows something about the severance blade that took Antius's life. He needs your help first though...
Step 1: Preparation. The Shade of Farelaith is located at 74.3N, 58.7E, which is along the northern shore of the Olthoi North. The fastest way is to use the Halina settlement out of Cragstone. You will have a short run, but if you meet the 80+ requirement of the quest, you shouldn't need to buff for the run. When you arrive, greet the spirit and he will tell you his tale of woe. His brothers have been subverted by the Shadows and are within the nearby Temple of Stirring Shadow. You might as well buff outside the dungeon, although the inside is safe. You will be fighting Shadows - Spectres and Phantoms exclusively - so buff a fire weapon and put up all of your protects. If you really want to bane, go ahead and buff physical damage types, but Impen should be sufficient. When you are ready, go into the dungeon.
Step 2: Temple of Stirring Shadow. The temple is divided into three wings, each containing one of Farelaith's brothers. Your first target is Baranaith, who lives in the south wing. Enter the portal to the south wing and you will be greeted by a good number of Shadows. You shouldn't have much trouble defeating them, except for the stray Shadow that carries a shield if you aren't a mage. Hug the left wall and you will eventually reach a large room (there are a couple dead ends - just keep hugging the left wall). Kill the Shadows here and look for a Shadow wielding a Spear. Loot the corpses and grab the Spear of Baranaith. Each person needs one to advance the quest. When you have the spear, hit the exit portal and you will find yourself back up top, near Farelaith. Give him the spear and he will alter it into the Spear of Winter Flame and ask you to destroy Korogaith, his second brother. Go back into the dungeon and head through the north wing. This section is much more mazelike than the first section, so go slowly. Take the right exit from the entrance room and then look for a turn off to the left very shortly after you leave the first room. You should make your way down a ramp. After you go down, make your way along the left wall again and you will eventually reach a ramp leading down. Head down and you will find a large room. Kill the Shadows and check for Korogaith's Axe. Hit the exit portal and give the axe to Farelaith to upgrade it to the Axe of Winter Flame. Your final task is to take out Hirannaith in the east wing. This final section is very straightforward - just go east. Cross the Acid pit room and head down the ramp. You will find yourself in a large room with a small enclosure in the middle. Kill the Shadows here and look for Hirannaith's Mace on the corpses. When everyone has it, continue east and follow the corridor to the exit portal. Again, return the mace to Farelaith and he will upgrade it to the Mace of Winter Flame. Farelaith will also give you 1.5M XP and an untranslated book telling about his and his brothers' sad lives.
Rewards. The 3 weapons you received (Axe, Mace, and Spear) have a unique Shadow-Slayer property, as well as Crushing Blow and Biting Strike. Unfortunately, their damages aren't high enough to make them really useful. They are giveable though, should you have a friend who would like one. Take your untranslated book to either Edobar the Esoteric (if you favor Elysa's faction) or Gallatria du Ressetta (if you prefer the Viamontians) for a readable copy and 500K XP.
